Farm to Heart: Our Visit to Tilden Little Farm & Nature Area
Farm-Fresh Memories
Can a goat teach a toddler about the future of our planet? Our January trip to Tilden Little Farm proved that the answer is a resounding yes! From meeting rabbits and chickens to exploring the Wildcat Creek Watershed, our students saw firsthand how environmentally responsible agriculture keeps our Earth healthy.
As we celebrate Earth Week, join us in reflecting on the natural and cultural history of the Tilden Nature Area and learn how these early "farm-to-heart" connections help our children understand the importance of sustaining life for generations to come. Plus, find out how you can support our local ecosystems through our TerraCycle recycling drive and home gardening projects!
Roots and Routes: A Journey Through OMCA
Mapping Our History at OMCA
How do we teach toddlers about history? By letting them play in it! Our February trip to the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) was a journey through Native lands and interactive nature play. As we celebrate Earth Week, we’re reflecting on how "place-based education" and Indigenous wisdom help our students build a deeper respect for the land we call home. Read more to see how we used maps to explore the East Bay and how you can become a "Community Scientist" in your own backyard this week!
Whisking Up Wonder: Adventures in Our Cooking Station
Brisket, Biscuits, and Backyard Apples
From our backyard apple trees to the Instant Pot, our cooking station is officially open! This Earth Week, we’re exploring how "farm-to-table" learning helps toddlers develop healthy eating habits and a love for our planet. Whether we’re harvesting carrots from our planters or feeding our classroom worms, we’re learning that "saving the earth" can be absolutely delicious. Read more to find out why our chefs are more likely to eat their veggies when they've prepared them themselves—plus, get tips for sustainable cooking at home!

Wild Hearts & Curious Minds: Remembering Sulphur Creek
Wild Wonders at Sulphur Creek
Can a turtle shell teach a toddler about empathy? We think so! Revisit our favorite fall field trip to Sulphur Creek Nature Center in Hayward, where our students traded the classroom for the great outdoors. From observing wild turkeys on the hillside to exploring the difference between reptiles and mammals, this "outdoor classroom" experience is the heart of our nature-based curriculum.
As we celebrate Earth Week, we’re diving into the science of why playing in the dirt and connecting with local wildlife is essential for early childhood development. Read more to see how we’re building the next generation of environmental stewards right here in the East Bay—plus, find out how you can support local wildlife rehabilitation and our ongoing TerraCycle recycling efforts!
Planting the Seeds of Tomorrow: Earth Week in the Classroom!
Little Hands, Big Roots
What happens when you give a toddler a seed and a little bit of dirt? Magic! This Earth Week, we’re getting our hands messy as we dive into the science of gardening at our Roosevelt Elementary garden plot. From practicing fine motor skills with seedling starters to exploring the "good" microbes in the soil, our students are discovering that they have the power to grow something beautiful.
Read our latest post to explore the research-backed benefits of "nature play," learn about the special visitors arriving for our metamorphosis study, and see how you can join our TerraCycle mission to keep our local San Leandro community green. Plus, we’ve shared three simple, toddler-friendly eco-projects you can do at home this weekend!
Moon Cakes for the Lunar New Year!
Last month, our preschoolers celebrated Lunar New Year with a hands-on, delicious activity: decorating rice cakes to look like moons! We talked about the moon as a symbol of new beginnings and gathered around the table to create our own edible “moon art.”

Rainy day crafting: Make a rainbow with us!
Rain or shine, our week of weather-themed curriculum is always a blast. We painted with watercolors in art, built tornados in a bottle in our STEAM garden, made rainbow toast in cooking, and set up a high jump for “puddle-jumping” outside.
…and we’ve got to be on our way!
