Sunshine, Mud, and Magic: Recapping Our 2026 Broadmoor Summer Camp Weeks!
What a summer it has been at Broadmoor Parent Participation Nursery School! While the summer months can sometimes feel like a long, unstructured stretch of trying to keep little ones entertained, our backyard play yard was buzzing with the best kind of chaos: child-led play, messy hands, and infectious giggles.
As a cooperative preschool, we are in a unique position. Not all co-ops have the capacity to offer summer camp sessions, but we are so incredibly proud to host these weeks year after year. Our camp doesn't just serve our enrolled members; it acts as a vital resource for other co-op caregivers and families throughout the broader San Leandro and East Bay community.
For five wonderful weeks, our young campers explored, created, and bonded. Let’s take a look back at the magical weekly themes that made up our 2026 Summer Camp:
🌟 A Look Back: Our Weekly Camp Themes
Shaving cream, anyone?
Week 1: Ooey Gooey with Ms. Kacia We kicked off the summer by embracing the mess! From giant mud kitchens to cornstarch-y oobleck, our campers spent the week learning with their hands (and sometimes their toes!).
Week 2: Rock ’n Roll with Ms. Kacia A high-energy week of acoustic exploration! We turned our space into a rock star stage with daily dance parties, shaker-making, and guitaring.
Week 3: Oceans Alive with Ms. Kacia Even with a shorter week, we dove deep into marine life. Campers experimented with water flow at our troughs and kiddie pools.
Week 4: Weather with Ms. Liz From hammering colorful chalk to running through a water sprinkler, this week brought the science of weather to life. The kids had a splash.
Week 5: Celebrations with Ms. Liz We wrapped up our main camp season with a festive bang! Campers engaged in collaborative party-planning, decorated our space, and celebrated Halloween in July.
🧠The Science of Summer Play: Why It Matters
Behind the mud pies, water tunnels, and painted rocks lies a deep foundation of early childhood development. In early childhood education, summer camp is not just "childcare"—it is a critical cognitive bridge.
Two major scientific studies highlight why continuing unstructured, free play during the summer months is essential for young minds:
Preventing the "Summer Slide" through Play: A landmark clinical report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics—The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children—highlights that active, child-led free play is crucial for developing the executive function and cognitive adaptability kids need over summer breaks. When children direct their own play—like choosing how to channel water through tubes or building structures—they are exercising critical-thinking skills and self-regulation without the rigid pressure of structured academic settings.
Easing Transition Anxiety and Building School Familiarity: Transitioning into a school environment comes with a natural wave of anxiety. A study published in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) PMC Database—Effects of an Unstructured Free Play and Mindfulness Intervention on Wellbeing in Kindergarten Students—found that unstructured play is highly effective in promoting children’s happiness and playfulness. The researchers concluded that these positive emotions directly support young children's mental health and wellbeing as they navigate significant stressors, such as school transition and parent-child separation.
By attending a relaxed summer camp, children experience a gentle, stepped transition:
Phase 1 (No time on campus): The school is an abstract concept.
Phase 2 (Some time on campus): Camp offers a low-pressure, fun-first exposure where they realize school is a safe, delightful place.
Phase 3 (Recurring days at preschool): When Fall finally rolls around, the environment, the play structures, and the educators (like our beloved Ms. Kacia and Ms. Liz) are already safe and familiar. This dramatically reduces separation anxiety and builds immediate comfort.
🤝 The Power of Community & Socialization
At Broadmoor, everything we do is anchored in child-led projects and community socialization. By allowing children to decide what they want to build, paint, or explore, we foster a deep sense of autonomy. When a child says, "Let's make a giant river through the gravel!" and parent volunteers step back to let them lead, they learn that their ideas have power and value.
Furthermore, our camp serves as a vital social laboratory. In a world where screens and structured schedules dominate, our summer camp provides a space for pure peer-to-peer socialization. Children learn to negotiate, share loose parts, collaborate on sand castles, and practice empathy in real-time.
❤️ A Resource for All
We are incredibly grateful that Broadmoor can host these camp weeks. For co-op parents and East Bay caregivers alike, these sessions offer a rare, supportive space where adults connect, share parenting tips, and work side-by-side to support our children.
Thank you to all the families, parent-workers, and our incredible directors who made this summer one for the history books. We can't wait to see both returning and new faces as we officially enter our 88th year of cooperative magic this Fall! 🍂
